SPOKANE, Wash. -- The No. 15 Santa Clara women's soccer team escaped Luger Field with a 3-2 double-overtime victory over upset-minded Gonzaga Saturday.
The Broncos (13-5-2, 6-1-2 West Coast Conference) got the game-winner from Jenna Holtz with five seconds left in the game. She brought in a ball from Grace Cutler at the top of the box, took a dribble, and slid a ball with the outside of her foot past Christie Tombari in the waning seconds. It was her second goal of the season, while Cutler had her first assist.
Gonzaga outshot SCU 16-14, while both schools put nine shots on goal. The Broncos took six corner kicks to GU's two.
Santa Clara's Julie Vass recorded a brace. She opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a low strike from the top of the box. Ashley Doyle was credited with the assist. Vass' eighth goal of the season came in the 82nd minute and sent the match into extra time.
Heather Johnson, playing in her final collegiate game, scored her 15th career goal at GU. Her final collegiate goal was a memorable one. The senior struck a ball very well from the top of the box and put into the corner of the net. Jodi Ulkekul had her third assist of the season on the goal.
Karley Baggerly gave the Bulldogs (2-12-5, 1-7-1 WCC) the lead in the in the 74th minute. It was her conference-best eighth goal of the season. All four of Baggerly's shots were on frame Saturday. Vass took a game-high five shots.
Andi Tostanoski stopped seven GU shots for the Broncos, while Christie Tombari made six saves for Gonzaga.
