PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Gonzaga women's basketball team dropped their first true road game of the season at Washington State Tuesday, 55-48.
The Cougars (8-1) continued their hot start to the season. WSU held the Zags to 28.1 percent shooting from the field. Gonzaga committed 20 of the game's 38 turnovers, and made eight of its 16 free-throw attempts. But, the Bulldogs were still in the game late in regulation.
A three-pointer from Emma Stach with 2:19 left in the game brought Gonzaga within one, 46-45. But, the Zags missed a lay-in, two three-pointers and had two turnovers in their final seven possessions. GU made two of its final 13 shots from the field.
Washington State was held to 32 percent shooting from the field. The Cougars were 9-of-14 from the free-throw line. Both teams shot 18 three-pointers, WSU made six, while Gonzaga made four.
The Bulldogs (6-4) had a slim 47-45 rebound advantage, turning 23 offensive boards into 21 points. GU had a 20-16 edge in the paint.
Borislava Hristova made seven of her 16 shots from the field and led all scorers with 17 points. Louise Brown added 14 points and four steals for the Cougars.
Shelby Cheslek recorded her 12th career double-double with 15 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. It marked the seventh time in her career she has pulled down 14 boards. The senior made seven of her 10 shots from the field Tuesday. Stach contributed 11 points. Georgia Stirton dished out a season-high six assists, while Elle Tinkle made four steals.
Washington State never trailed in the 25th meeting between the regional rivals. The game featured no ties. The Cougars led by as many as 11 points, 19-8 in the first quarter, and had a 29-21 advantage at halftime. Gonzaga closed within one possession on four occasions in the final quarter.
The Bulldogs travel to Dayton for their next game Friday. It's the third all-time meeting between the Flyers (6-2) and GU. The Zags rallied for a 75-65 victory last season in Spokane.
