PULLMAN, Wash. - The Gonzaga women's and men's track teams had solid showings at the Cougar Indoor Saturday. It was the Zags first showing at the meet in the program's four-year history.
"Today wasn't so much about getting personal bests today as being competitive," Director of Gonzaga's track program Pat Tyson said. "We opened up getting off the bus in the mile; the fast heat brought respectable performances by Conor McCandless and Dillon Quintana. They showed poise and nice competitiveness, a great way to start the day."
McCandless placed third in the men's mile. He crossed the line at 4:19.75, just in front of Quintana's 4:19.81. Dan Amann and Ned Fischer both finished in the top 10 as well.
Maggie Jones had a third place finish in the women's 800 meters. Her time of 2:20.13 was also third in her heat. In the mile, Amelia Evans edged out her sister, Olivia, by two seconds, while Claren Fraher just beat out her sister, Alison, by four seconds.
"We had a solid day in Pullman," GU women's track coach Patty Ley said. "Maggie had a good day. The mile was fun with the sister duos racing and staying close throughout the race. Katy Culver knocked off a few seconds off her 3,000-meter personal record. She continues to build confidence and we're hoping for a great spring from her.
"And back to the 800, we had a great 1-2 finish in the second heat with Corrine Murray pulling past Megan Chucka over the last 50. This was Megan's first track race as a Bulldog after an injury slowed her freshman year. Exciting to see what those two will do this spring."
Zac Garrard placed fourth in the men's 800 meters at 1:55.95. Ian Goldizen was right behind in fifth at 1:57.59. Ben Stout and Jack Pearce had fourth and fifth place finishes in the 3,000.
"Again, gauging the races the athletes gained valuable experience that will pay off for the outdoor season," Tyson said.
The Bulldogs return to the Dempsey Center for their final meet of the indoor regular season next Friday and Saturday. The Husky Classic will have live video and stats on GoZags.com.
