Zags represented at USATF National Championship by three runners

EUGENE, OR.- Gonzaga Track & Field will be represented by three runners competing in the USA Track & Field National Outdoor Championship finals.

Represented by two alumni and one current Zag, the Bulldogs will feature prominently in tonight's 10,000 meters as Rosina Machu, Wil Smith (Class of 2025) and James Mwaura (Class of 2023) will look to compete for a national title. Held in historic Hayward Field in Eugene Oregon, all three runners will be returning to the track on which they each won recognition as All-Americans at the NCAA Track & Field Championships.

Machu, who set a school record in the women's 10,000 meters (32:15.49) just last month at the same track at the NCAA Outdoor Track Championships, will run in the finals at 6:54 p.m.

Smith and Mwaura will both run immediately afterwards, with the current start time listed for 8:08 p.m. Smith holds the second fastest 10,000 meter mark in school history, while Mwaura holds the men's 10k record after running 27:50.44 at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene.

Mwaura will also compete in the final of the 5,000 meters, another distance in which he holds the school record with a time of 13:30.02, also set at Hayward Field.

The 5,000 meter championship will be shown nationally on NBC at 1:52 p.m. on Sunday, August 3rd. Both 10,000 meter championships will be streamed on USATF.tv starting at 6:54 p.m. tonight.
