Women's Crew Tops UC Davis to Open Spring

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Gonzaga women's rowing team capped off its week of training during spring break with solid performances to defeat UC Davis head-to-head at the Port of Sacramento in West Sacramento, Calif., on Saturday morning.

"It's always good to see progress during a big week of training like this," head coach Glenn Putyrae said. "I think these results are representative of the training we've done, and we appreciate UC Davis for hosting us this weekend. It's about building a foundation for the season, then improving each week as we work toward May."

Gonzaga put seven boats on the water in six different classes, including four eights and three fours. The top two varsity squads for GU each took 33-second victories. In the varsity 8+, the team of Karly Dougherty, Kara Soucek, Ingrid Stansberry, Isabelle Belzil, Casey Burt, Brooklyn Beeler, Maddie Turbes, Devyn Bell and Madeleine Verspieren turned in a time of 6:40.47.

The GU varsity 4+ team of Megan Dennison, Ashley Patterson, Megan Carroll, Natalie Potts and Lily Rorick turned in a time of 7:54.6 outlasted the fellow GU team of Sydney Matsuda-Fong, Emma Watanabe, Shaylee Kieffer, Cheryl Murbach andIsabella Spies, who had a time of 8:09.8. Both teams defeated UC Davis' time of 8:18.25.

In the second varsity 8+, GU's team of Laura Brasch, Naomi Medley, Micailah Donner, Olivia Marsh, Meghan McCallum, Megan Kramer, Clair Manthey, Amelie Tristant and Hannah Brown won with a time of 6:56.83 over UC Davis.

In the novice boats, the GU 4+ team of Heather Handy, Hannah Schneiderman, Madison Spina, Anna Johnson and Alexis Legaspi had a winning time of 8:02.30. The novice 8+ team of Karly Dougherty, Alexis Legaspi, Isabelle Belzil, Cheryl Murbach, Hannah Schneiderman, Madison Spina, Anna Johnson, Megan Kramer and Ashley Patterson had a time of 7:28.67, while the second novice 8+ of Alyssa Saad, Nicolette Ocampo, Sabrina Bonaci, Hayley Jones, Megan Seifert, Jamie Mancini, Rebecca Dunne, Brittney Murray and Audrey Murray turned in a time of 7:59.4.

The Zags will be back on the water at Silver Lake, Wash., against Oregon State on Sunday, March 22.
