SAN BRUNO, Calif.—Freshman utility player Tyler Frost earned West Coast Conference Player of the Week honors Monday after a tremendous showing at the plate during the Phoenix Muni Classic last weekend, as announced the conference office.
In front of his hometown fans at Phoenix Municipal Stadium in Phoenix, Frost led the Bulldogs with a .563 average and .813 slugging percentage, going 9-for-16 with a four runs, three RBIs, a double, and his first career home run. He was particularly effective at the dish on Feb. 26, where in game two of a doubleheader against Purdue, Frost went 4-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored, setting or tying season and career marks in all categories. Two days later, Frost wrapped up his weekend with his first career home run, going yard off redshirt senior and First Team All-Pac 12 selection Ryan Kellogg of Arizona State.
Overall, Frost is hitting .395 on the year with a .570 slugging percentage, both second on the team. Additionally, his batting average is second-highest in the WCC, behind only teammate Mitchell Gunsolus' .462, and his slugging percentage is fifth in the conference. Frost's also second with nine runs scored and four hits for extra bases, and his five RBIs put him fourth on the squad. The Zags' typical centerfielder, Frost is also the only regular everyday freshman starter for Gonzaga, and he's one of two GU regulars with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage, the other being Sam Brown.
A jack of all trades, Frost also made his first career start on the mound at the Phoenix Muni Classic, earning the nod in game one of the Feb. 26 doubleheader against Purdue. He threw 6.0 innings, allowing four earned runs while striking out three.
The WCC also announced that San Diego hurler David Hill earned Pitcher of the Week.
Frost and the rest of the Gonzaga baseball team will next head to the Central time zone for their final five games of a long season-opening homestand. The Zags will make stops in New Orleans, La., and Fayetteville, Ark.; the trip starts with a 4:30 p.m. Pacific (6:30 CT) contest Friday, March 6 at Tulane.
