MTEN Falls at Pacific 4-2

STOCKTON, Calif.—The Gonzaga University men's tennis team played its first road West Coast Conference match Friday, falling 4-2 to Pacific in Stockton, Calif.
Both of Gonzaga's points came from singles play. The first score came from Vladimir Mijatovic, who beat the Tigers' Marlon Brand at No. 4 singles. Mijatovic won the first set via a tiebreak at 7-6, but the senior posted a few breaks in the second set to pick up the 7-6, 6-2 victory. He now has 10 singles wins in dual play, tying for the most on the team.
Also winning a singles contest today was Alvaro Nazal. The Zag won at the top spot, going to three sets before dispatching Miguel Diaz. Diaz took the first set 1-6, but Nazal forced and won a tiebreak in the second set, bringing up a third set super tiebreak. In the extra frame, the redshirt junior from Santiago, Chile, cruised to a 10-4 win to remain perfect in WCC duals.
The Tigers clinched the match with three singles wins. At No. 2 singles, Nick Kamisar won eight games but fell to Jose Chamba 6-4, 6-4, Vicente Varas took six games on court six in a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Ashwin Sharma, and Sergio Chip fell 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles to Bernardo Oliveira.
The match on court three, Hayden Smith versus Daniel Alameh, did not finish. Both players won a set before the match was abandoned.
Pacific won the doubles point to begin the match. The Tigers' Alameh and Brand beat Kamisar and Chip 6-2 at No. 2 singles, and Oliveira and Alex Giannini beat Nazal and Joey Brandt 6-4 at No. 3 singles. The top doubles matchup did not finish.
Gonzaga (9-5, 1-2 WCC) will remain in the Bay Area for the final game of the road trip, playing Saint Mary's on Saturday, March 28, in Moraga, Calif. That contest will begin at 12:00 p.m.
