WGOLF Starts WCCs in Second Place

Round One Scores | Tournament Central

SOMIS, Calif.—The Gonzaga University women's golf squad teed off at the 2015 West Coast Conference Championship Monday, finishing day one in second place at Saticoy Country Club in Somis, Calif.

Senior Han Wu leads the Bulldogs with a score of 77, five strokes above par. She birdied her very first hole of the day and made the turn at three over par. After seven pars and two bogeys on the inward nine, she wrapped up her 77 and a share of third place in the tournament. Wu carded 12 pars on the day, equaling the second-most in the field.

One shot back, defending WCC champion Alice Kim is tied for fifth at 78, six shots above par. Kim shot +3 on both the front nine and back nines, carding one birdie, four pars, and one bogey on each. The senior is one of just three players averaging below par on par 5s.

The other three Zags are all tied for 13th with 81 strokes, nine shots above par. Sophomore Ciera Min turned in nine-hole scores of +4 and +5, counting one birdie and eight pars on the day, while both Raychelle Santos and Dania Uy went five strokes above par on the front nine and four strokes above on the back. They both counted two birdies on the day - the only two Zags to do so - and Uy settled down to par six holes on the back nine while Santos parred three.

"This is a brutally hard course," said Gonzaga women's golf head coach Brad Rickel. "The greens are very difficult and the wind was up, too. Han was pretty solid all day and did a good job of keeping her ball in good positions. The entire team competed well given how hard the day was."

As a team, Gonzaga counted 317 strokes (+29) on the day. The Bulldogs are six shots behind first-place Pepperdine, which posted 311 (+23), and they're one stroke ahead of San Francisco for third place. BYU is fourth at 324 (+36), and Santa Clara fifth at 325 (+37).

The Waves' Marissa Chow leads the individual competition with a first-round total of 74 (+2). Wu and USF's Emelie Lundstrom are each one stroke out of second place, which is occupied by Santa Clara's Ashley Noda at 76 (+4).

Gonzaga will continue the WCC Championship with round two on Tuesday, April 14, again at Saticoy Country Club. Santos will lead the Zags out onto the 72-par, 6,085 yard course at 9:15 a.m. Wu will be the final GU golfer to hit the links as she'll tee off at 9:59 a.m.

Rickel looks for the Zags to take better advantage of strong tee shots and to be a bit more familiar with the course. "Tomorrow we have to take advantage of being in a good place off the tee," he said. "We also need to figure out the greens better."
