Women's Crew Downed at Washington State

WAWAWAI LANDING, Wash. - The Gonzaga women's rowing crew fell to No. 11 Washington State on Saturday morning at Wawawai Landing, Wash.

Head coach Glenn Putyrae's Varsity 8+ squad gave the Cougars a run, ultimately falling by less than seven seconds with a 2,000-meter time of 6:29.08. The GU team consisted of Karly Dougherty, Kara Soucek, Ingrid Stansberry, Isabelle Belzil, Devyn Bell, Maddie Turbes Casey Burt, Brooklyn Beeler and Olivia Marsh.

In the Varsity 4+, Gonzaga's team of Laura Brasch, Megan Carroll, Lily Rorick, Hannah Schneiderman and Megan Kramer completed the course in a time of 7:44.44 to WSU's 7:17.51.

Gonzaga placed three more boats on the water on the day including Second, Third and Novice 8+ teams. The Second Varsity 8+ team of Heather Handy, Ashley Patterson, Clare Manthey, Alexis Legaspi, Meghan McCallum, Anna Johnson, Hannah Brown, Micailah Donner and Madeleine Verspieren had second-place time of 6:53.61.

The Third Varsity and Novice 8+ boats hit the water in the same race, coming in third and fourth. The GU Third Varsity boat of Hailey Rousseau, Emma Watanabe, Natalie Potts, Cheryl Murbach, Madison Spina, Hayley Jones, Shaylee Kieffer, Amelie Tristant and Bella Spies finished in time of 7:01.78, while the Novice boat of Alyssa Saad, Hannah Schneiderman, Sabrina Bonaci, Nikki Ocampo, Megan Seifert, Megan Kramer, Rebecca Dunne, Jamie Mancini and Audrey Murray had a time of 7:19.07.

"We left there today knowing exactly where we stand in comparison to the No. 11 team in the country," Putyrae said. "No one was hanging their head, we just have to get back to work on Monday. We have some big opportunities ahead of us."

The women's crew team will be back on the water each of the next two weekends before gearing up for the WCC Championships in May. Gonzaga will travel to Lake Natoma, Calif., on April 11-12 for the Lake Natoma Invitational, then to Lake Hartwell, S.C., for the Clemson Invitational.
