MTEN Begins Final Homestand with Loss to Portland

SPOKANE, Wash.—The Gonzaga University men's tennis team began its final homestand of the 2015 season Saturday, hosting Pacific Northwest foe Portland at The Stevens Center. The visiting Pilots spoiled the afternoon by taking a 5-2 decision over the Bulldogs.

Gonzaga started the match by winning the doubles point, its second doubles point of the West Coast Conference season. Portland won the first doubles match to finish on court one, but Alvaro Nazal and Nick Kamisar evened up the score on court two, beating Kent Andreasen and Michail Pervolarakis 6-2. The win was their first doubles match together since Feb. 8.

GU picked up the doubles point when Sergio Chip and Joey Brandt won on court three, taking down the Pilots' Mathieu and Pierre Garcia 6-4. Prior to today, Chip and Brandt had not competed as a doubles pair.

Portland won the match in singles play, picking up victories in the first four singles matches to finish. The Pilots clinched the match on court three, where Pervolarakis and Hayden Smith went to three sets. The two split the first two sets, with Pervolarakis winning the first 6-2 and Smith sweeping the second 0-6. In the final set, Pervolarakis outlasted Smith 6-4, guaranteeing victory for the Pilots.

On court two, Kamisar gave the Zags their second point of the day with a two-set singles win. He beat Reid DeLaubenfels by doubling the Pilot up in the first set and taking the second in a tiebreak. The final score of that match was 6-3, 7-6 (2).

In the final match to wrap up, Vladimir Mijatovic also played three sets The GU senior won five games in the first set but fell 7-5 to Mathieu Garcia, and then he stormed back to take the second 2-6.Garcia prevailed in the third set 6-4, ending the match.

Gonzaga (9-7, 1-4 WCC) will remain home for its final weekend at The Stevens Center this year. They host BYU on Friday, April 10, at 1:00 p.m., and their final home match will take place a day later on Saturday, April 11. That Senior Day contest against San Diego will begin at 12:00 p.m.
