SAN BRUNO, Calif.—For the third time this season, Gonzaga right hander Brandon Bailey was singled out as West Coast Conference Rawlings Pitcher of the Week by the conference office after shutting down No. 2 UCLA for seven innings on May 2.
Bailey saw his fourth scoreless start of the season against the second-ranked Bruins, keeping them off the board through seven innings while the Zags broke away late for a 6-1 win. He tallied just four strikeouts on the night, but the sophomore used those effectively by getting the Bruins to strand eight runners on the basepaths during his time on the mound. The win was Bailey's seventh of the season, tying for second in the WCC.
Thanks in large part to Bailey's performance - the game was 1-0 until Gonzaga scored five in the seventh inning - Gonzaga picked up its second win over a second ranked team since 2013. The Bruins were the highest-ranked team Gonzaga's toppled all season as their other ranked victories came over #25/27 Tulane and #25 San Diego.
This is the third time Bailey's earned WCC Pitcher of the Week. He also earned the award after tossing 8.0 scoreless innings against the Green Wave March 6 and following his first career complete game shutout April 12 versus Saint Mary's. Three field players - Tyler Frost, Sam Brown, and Taylor Jones - have each earned the conference's Player of the Week honor once this season.
Bailey and the rest of the GU baseball team will wrap up the 2015 home slate this weekend with a three-game stint against Pacific. The first game of that series will start at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 8, at Patterson Baseball Complex & Washington Trust Field.
