SPOKANE, Wash.—Gonzaga infielder Mitchell Gunsolus received regional academic honors Thursday, earning a spot on the 2015 Capital One Academic All-District team for District 8.
Gunsolus, the Zags' third baseman, has a 3.45 GPA as a business major. A senior, he's set to graduate this coming Sunday, May 10, with his Bachelor's degree. On the diamond, Gunsolus has been the Bulldogs' spark plug this season, ranking among the team's top three in every offensive category. He's on pace for career highs with a .324 batting average, .503 slugging percentage, 38 runs scored, and 58 hits. Additionally, he's already set career marks in doubles, home runs, and runs batted in. Gunsolus will leave Gonzaga among the program's top 10 in career walks and top three in triples.
This is Gunsolus' first Academic All-District honor but not his first academic award. He's earned a spot on the West Coast Conference's All-Academic team in each of the last two years.
The Capital One Academic All-District teams are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America and honor the nation's top student-athletes. There are eight geographic districts across the United States, and District 8 comprises all Division I schools from Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.
As he's part of Division 8's first team, Gunsolus will now be eligible to earn Capital One Academic All-America honors. Those squads will be announced later in the season.
Gunsolus and the rest of the Gonzaga baseball team will play their final three home games of the season this weekend, hosting WCC foe Pacific at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field in Spokane. The first game in that series will take place Friday, May 8, at 6:00 p.m.
