Complete Mid-Major Recruiting Rankings
SPOKANE, Wash.—Already highly-regarded, the Gonzaga University women's tennis recruiting class picked up an additional honor Friday when TennisRecruting.net voted the four incoming freshmen as the seventh best mid-major recruiting class in the nation.
Gonzaga's four-player class of Nevada Apollo, Domonique Garley, Graciela Rosas, and Sophie Whittle earned seventh in the mid-major recruiting poll, the highest an incoming class has been voted in school history. The Zags' three fall signees - Apollo, Rosas, and Whittle - had already received votes in TennisRecruting.net's Overall Top 25 poll in February before Garley joined the trio in May.
A top 50 recruit from the class of 2015, Apollo comes to Spokane from the Advantage Tennis Academy in Irvine, Calif. A native of Las Vegas, Nev., she's the second-ranked recruit from the state of Nevada and also has a handful of strong tournament finishes under her belt. Most recently, Apollo took third place at the November USTA National Selection Tournament in Irvine, Calif., beating numerous highly-ranked recruits and current college freshmen.
Garley, meanwhile, has three top-three finishes in the Texas 5A state tournament, winning the state title this past May as a senior. Previously, she finished third in the bracket as a sophomore and advanced to the championship match last year as a junior. She's also found success on the UTSA circuit and is one of the 10 best recruits from the state of Texas, according to Babolai.
Rosas, a Mexicali, Mexico native, has been the top ranked player in her state for the last six years. She's also represented Baja California in five consecutive National Olympics - winning gold in 2011 - and picked up numerous other tournament victories along the way. Rosas has big wins over current Vanderbilt and San Diego recruits and a freshman from the University of Colorado.
Whittle comes to Gonzaga from Arroyo Grande High School in southern California, where she's been unbeatable. The senior went undefeated in high school singles play, going 121-0 and winning four PAC 8 singles titles. A four-star recruit according to TennisRecruiting.net, Whittle even helped Arroyo Grande earn its first sectional championship in school history.
These four incoming freshmen will join four returners from the successful 2014-15 campaign - Franziska Koehler, Samantha Polayes, Melanie Yates, and Alex Bourguignon - once school starts again in the fall.
