June 22, 2015 DALLAS -- Gonzaga men's golfer, Sean Walsh, tied for sixth at the 106th Texas Amateur Championship at the Bent Tree Country Club Sunday.
Fresh off the U.S. Open Sectional qualifier, Walsh was one-under-par (212) through the 54-hole tournament. He was two-under in the opening round, two-over in Round 2, and carded a 70 (-1) on the final day over the 7,081-yard par-71 course.
"I was able to take a ton of positives from the Texas Amateur even though I wasn't really in the mix the final day," Walsh said. "I didn't hit the ball the way I would've liked, but I was still able to score really well and showed a lot of fight and resiliency when I started off poorly."
Walsh made 26 pars through the three rounds. He made 16 birdies, including five through the final nine holes. He was even on the par-four holes and four-under on the two par-five holes. The upcoming senior birdied the 419-yard 11th hole all three rounds.
Michael Cotton, a 19-year-old sophomore at the University of North Texas, took medalist honors at nine-under (204). He shot a sizzling seven-under on the back nine in the final round. He beat out runner-up, Preston Stanley, by three strokes.
Walsh will play at the 115th Men's North & South Amateur Championship from June 29-July 3. He will have the opportunity to play at the renowned Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, N.C. The tournament will be played on historic Pinehurst No. 2 course.
"Heading to Pinehurst next week, if I'm able to start strong on the first five or six holes, and finish the rounds the way I have been, I feel like I'll be able to put myself in contention to win by the end of the tournament," Walsh said.
