July 2, 2015 SPOKANE, Wash. -- Gonzaga men's golfers Will Brueckner and David Ganz both recently finished their respective state amateur championships in match play stages.
Brueckner tied for 25th through stoke play at the California Amateur Championships at the Lake Merced Golf Club. The par-72 course played 6,840 yards. In Daly City, Calif., the upcoming sophomore finished the two rounds of stroke play at two-over-par (146). He carded a 71 (-1) on the first 18 holes, before ending Round 2 at three-over (+3). Seeded-31st in the match-play bracket, Brueckner competed very well with second-seeded Jake Knapp. The duo was even through eight holes at two-under, and then Brueckner took a one-hole lead after winning the ninth. Knapp, a junior at UCLA, tied the matchup by winning the 11th-hole. Both golfers shot even-par on the following four holes, until Knapp won the final two holes to take the match 2 and 1.
"Being the best amateur in California has always been my goal, and I love match play, so the state amateur is my favorite tournament of the year," Brueckner said. "This year I didn't have as much success as I did last year, but I'm seeing improvements in my game that will serve me well for this next Gonzaga season, so I'm stoked."
Cal's Shotaro Ban took medalist honors after entering the match play bracket as the 25th-seed. He beat out 26th-seeded Joshua Sedeno, 5 and 4. Satch Herrmann topped the leaderboard through stroke play at eight-under (136). He was upset in the round of 16.
