July 16, 2015 SPOKANE, Wash. -- Playing in the top leagues across the country, 20 Gonzaga baseball players are spread from Cape Cod to Alaska, honing their skills against the nation's top collegiate talent.
Zag pitcher Brandon Bailey is playing in the prestigious Cape Cod League, pitching for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. He's posted a 3.62 ERA and 1-3 record with 23 strikeouts in 22.1 innings pitched.
In the well-respected Alaska Baseball League, six Zags are in uniform with three each on the Matsu Miners and Anchorage Bucs. Pitchers Eli Morgan and Calvin LeBrun have impressed on the mound for the Miners with Morgan 5-0 in five starts with a 0.83 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 32.2 innings. LeBrun is 3-1 with a 1.39 ERA, while Caleb Wood is hitting .220 with two RBI and three runs scored for the Miners.
For the Bucs, Taylor Jones is hitting .321 with six RBI and three runs scored, Sam Brown is hitting .274 with 11 RBI and 10 runs scored, and Justin Jacobs is hitting .225 with two doubles and 12 RBI.
In the Jayhawk Collegiate League, teammates Nick Brooks and Troy LaBrie have helped lead the offense for the Liberal Bee Jays. Brooks is hitting .329 with three homers, 11 RBI and 22 runs scored, while Labrie is hitting .268 with seven RBI.
In the West Coast League, four Zags -- Dustin Breshears, Hunter Wells, Wyatt Mills and Jace VanDeBrake -- were named to the league's North All-Star Team recently. VanDeBrake and Mills are teammates on the Yakima Valley Pippens where VanDeBrake is hitting .283 with 16 RBI and 25 runs scored. Mills, meanwhile, leads the team with a 1.37 earned-run average and seven saves as the closer. Wells is suiting up for the Wenatchee Apple Sox and is 4-1 with a 1.17 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 38.1 innings pitched. Breshears is playing shortstop for the Bellingham Bells and is hitting .247 with two homers and 12 RBI.
Those four each suit up with Zag teammates among others across the league. For the Wenatchee Apple Sox, Gage Burland is 1-1 with a 4.37 ERA, Kyle Vanderkin is hitting .216 with seven RBI and Nick Nyquist is hitting .233 with two doubles and 10 RBI.
Branson Trube is with the Yakima Valley Pippens and hitting .194 with one home and nine RBI and Joey Harris is on the Bellingham Bells and hitting .186 with six RBI and 10 runs scored.
Also, Jarod Gonzales is hitting .269 with three doubles and 10 runs scored for the Bend Elks and Sean-Luke Brija has a 2.70 ERA with two strikeouts in 3.2 innings pitched for the Walla Walla Sweets.
