SAN BRUNO, Calif. â€" Gonzaga's men's soccer team was picked sixth by the West Coast Conference head coaches, league officials announced Tuesday.
The Zags, coming off a second consecutive top-five finish in the league last season earned 21 points in the poll. San Francisco earned 39 points and two first-place votes in a very tight top five.
Saint Mary's (37, 1 first-place vote), San Diego (36, 2), Loyola Marymount (35, 2) and Santa Clara (32, 1) rounded out the rest of the teams slotted in the first five spots.
GU was picked sixth for the third time in the last four seasons.
Gonzaga compiled a 3-3-1 WCC mark last season, including back-to-back overtime victories to close the season. The Zags return eight starters, including three of their top five scorers from last season. Sophomore Graison Le tied for the team lead with seven points (2 goals, 3 assists), while returning sophomore Jakob Granlund and senior Connor Bevans each posted six points on the season with two goals and two assists apiece.
GU will open the season on the road for the first two games, taking on preseason 10th-ranked Washington in the season opener on Aug. 28. The Zags will then stay in the area to take on Seattle University on Aug. 30.
