SPOKANE, Wash. -- Gonzaga women's soccer and CSU Bakersfield combined for four goals, all in the second half, in the Zags' 3-1 victory at Luger Field Sunday.
The Bulldogs' (1-1-1) Karley Baggerly had another big match, scoring a goal and recording an assist. The junior rose to seventh all-time in program history with her 13th career goal. She is also now seventh at GU with 33 points in her career. Two of Baggerly's team-high three shots were on goal Sunday.
"Karley has definitely given us glimpses of what she is capable of," GU Head Coach Amy Edwards said. "And, we're going to need that from her through this year, because of the departure of so many attackers from last year's senior class."
Gonzaga had an 11-10 edge in shots in a match that featured 34 fouls, with the Zags having 18. GU placed five shots on frame, compared to the Roadrunners' four.
The Bulldogs' Christie Tombari made three saves in the contest. The redshirt junior is now eight saves away from seventh all-time on the Gonzaga all-time list.
Just under two minutes into the second half, junior Aliyah Miller scored her first collegiate goal to give the Zags the lead. Savannah Van Citters played a ball into the box off of a free kick and Miller headed it into the back of the CSUB net.
Baggerly scored her third goal, not only of the season, but of the weekend, in the 62nd minute. She slid to receive a great cross from Sydney Anderson and was able to loft a ball over Ornela from the ground just out of the six-yard box.
A pair of goals followed in a 20-second span less than five minutes later. Ornela took a free-kick from near midfield and dropped the lengthy goal into the GU net. Exactly 20 seconds later, Heather Johnson recorded her first goal of the season with a beautiful one-timed kick off a pass from Baggerly.
"Last week was the first time Heather (Johnson) has played since last spring," Edwards said. "She is coming along well, as people saw today. It's much-needed for our group to get her leadership and abilities out on the field. I think she started to look more like herself out there today, which was big for us."
Tombari thwarted two great Bakersfield (1-1-1) chances. The first was midway through the opening half, when she dove to block a Maja Green effort. It was the lone real scoring opportunity of the first half. In the 56th minute, Tombari made a leaping save to her left to stop an Alexa Orrante shot.
After taking 10 of their 14 shots in the second half Friday, the Zags took eight of their 11 shots in the second half Sunday. GU took eight corner kicks to the Roadrunners' two. CSUB's Tori VandeHoef and Madi Giammona both took two shots off of the bench.
"We made an adjustment at halftime, and I think it paid off," Edwards said. "We needed more wide play. We created some more opportunities and scored some nice goals."
Gonzaga improved to 4-0-0 all-time against CSUB. The Bulldogs won last season's meeting 2-1 in double overtime in Bakersfield.
The Zags welcome Seattle University and Utah State Friday and next Sunday. GU hosts Seattle in the sixth meeting all-time between the programs. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday.
"We have two good opponents coming in next," Edwards said. "Seattle is always a good game for us and a quality opponent. Utah State does very well in its conference, and is certainly a quality team. Hopefully we can put together a good week of training. I think we got better this weekend. We were challenged, and we responded. This coming weekend will present us with another challenge."
