PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. -- The Gonzaga men's golf team climbed to a tie for 11th place following the second round of the Saint Mary's Invitational Tuesday.
The Zags were once again led by their lone senior, Sean Walsh. The Keller, Texas native rose from 19th to tied for seventh on the individual leaderboard. His round of 69 (-2) was four strokes shy of his own program record. It was also only four strokes off the competitive course record. Walsh had the fifth-best second round score in the 84-golfer field.
After making only one birdie in his opening round Monday, Walsh made eight Tuesday. He opened the day at three-under par, but would be at even par after just two holes in Round 2. He birdied four of the last seven holes on the front-nine, making the turn at one-over. Four more birdies on the back-nine sealed his score. Walsh is even through two rounds with a 142 total.
Walsh's nine birdies in the tournament are the second-most in the field. He also has the best average on the course's four par-five holes at 4.38, shooting five-under on those holes. His even par (4.00 average) on the nine par-four holes is third-best. During the round, Walsh jumped as high as third on the leaderboard.
The Bulldogs climbed from 14th to inside the top 10 during the second round, to eventually a tie for 11th at the end of the day. GU is at 30-over (598) through two rounds. The Zags were six shots better on the second day, carding a 296 (+12).
Ryan Gaske and David Ganz were both two-over (73) in Round 2. Ganz made par on each hole on the front-nine and had two birdies on the back-nine. Gaske was four-over on the front, before going two-under on the back with a pair of birdies. After starting the day in 63rd place, Gaske is now tied for 40th at eight-over (150). Ganz is 77th at 16-over (158).
Will Brueckner is tied for 66th after two rounds. The sophomore finished the second day with an 81 (+10). He has a two-round total of 155 (+13). Angus Montgomery is 18-over (160), following a second round score of 82 (+11). Tyler Munetake continued his first collegiate tournament. The only freshman on the squad is 17-over (159) and playing as an individual. He finished at nine-over (80) Tuesday.
"Overall, we were more relaxed and played more intelligently today," Gonzaga Head Coach Robert Gray said. "We had three solid scores from Sean, Ryan and David. A solid fourth score would've been huge but both Will and Gus worked hard for every shot. We moved up three spots on the leaderboard and were up six spots at one point, but holes one through three got the best of us.
"Sean has put together two solid rounds and has himself in contention for the individual title. With a round of 288 or better, we should be able to jump four or five more spots and have a decent finish."
Montgomery will be the first Zag to tee off in the third and final round Wednesday. The junior starts at 7:40 a.m. Gonzaga begins the round on the back-nine. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
