PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State women's soccer used a pair of first half goals to pull away from Gonzaga, 3-0, on a cold and wet night Thursday.
The Cougars (7-0-0) remained perfect with the victory. They are one of only three teams in the country that has not conceded a loss or tie yet this season. WSU is two spots out of the top 25 in this week's NSCAA poll.
Washington State had a 16-12 advantage in shots against the Zags. The Cougars put nine shots on frame, compared to GU's four.
Cara Wegner opened the scoring in the 15th minute. The senior received a pass from Sofia Anker-Kofoed, dribbled to her right and struck a ball from the top of the 18-yard box into the back of the net. Wegner's third goal of the season found the upper-middle of the goal.
Less than a minute before halftime, Maddy Haro became the 10th Cougar to score a goal this season. The freshman tallied her first collegiate goal off of a deflection. She was in the right place at the right time kicking in a rebound. Gonzaga's Christie Tombari was able to block Beau Bremer's shot, but Haro put in the deflection.
Kaitlyn Johnson closed the scoring in the 60th minute. She brought in a cross from Kourtney Guetlein for her third goal of the season. Johnson's shot was near the six-yard box and hit the crossbar before going into the net.
Tombari crossed the 200-save plateau in her GU career. She is one of only six Zags to achieve that feat. The redshirt junior is two saves away from entering the program's all-time top five. She currently has 201 saves in her Gonzaga career. Ella Dederick made four saves for Washington State.
Jodi Ulkekul led the Bulldogs (1-4-3) with two shots on goal. Karley Baggerly and Kristin Hayman both took a pair of shots. Bremer and Chelsea Harkins both took three shots for the Cougars.
Gonzaga returns to Spokane for its final non-conference home match Sunday. The Zags welcome No. 25 Washington (7-1-0). The Huskies won their seventh straight contest Thursday, beating Portland 2-1. Sunday's game is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Luger Field.
