CLE ELUM, Wash. -- Sean Walsh bounced back from an opening round 78 (+7) to shoot two strokes under par (69) in the second round and is tied for 14th at the Husky Invitational.
The Zags, which are in 10th as a team, had ups and downs in the first two rounds Monday. Walsh was a prime example. The senior climbed as high as eighth on the leaderboard, then dropped to 58th, before climbing back to eighth, and finally ended in a tie for 14th. His two-round total of 147 is five strokes over par.
"Another great test of golf this week on a great course," GU Head Coach Robert Gray said. "The winds were up today with gusts at 20+ miles per hour and the temperature never got very warm, making for a cold and windy day. A lot of the holes played in cross winds, making tee shots tougher to hit fairways. The greens have a lot going on around them and when the wind is blowing like that, it's difficult to hit the ball in the right spot on the green, let alone just hit the greens.
"We got off to a rough start, playing our first four holes 10-over par. But the guys fought hard and played the final 32 holes at +23 in very tough conditions."
Walsh opened the day on the back-nine and was even par through the first 11 holes. He then carded an 11 on the par-four third hole, before going even par on the last six holes. After ending Round 1 at seven-over, the Keller, Texas native started his second round with a triple bogey on Hole 10.
At 10-over, Walsh began to work his way back up the leaderboard. He had four birdies on the back-nine and three more on the front-nine, including one on the third hole. His second round total of 69 included eight pars. Walsh had 19 pars on the first day, along with a tournament-high 10 birdies. His second round was one stroke off of the lowest round of the day.
"The 11 was a series of unfortunate events where he made good decisions after a stray tee shot but everything that could go wrong did," Gray said. "I'm very proud of the way he carried himself afterward, not letting it get to him, thus allowing himself to play the final six holes even par. He started his second round with a triple and battled back to shoot two under for the day, which was a great score."
Will Brueckner had a consistent day, finishing with a 76 (+5) in Round 1, and a 75 (+4) in the second round. He was six-over through the first nine holes of the day, but rebounded by going one-under with eight pars and a birdie on the front-nine. The Walnut Creek, Calif. native had three more birdies and nine pars in Round 2. The sophomore had the sixth-best day in the tournament on the par-four holes, going two-over on those holes with an average of 4.11.
Ryan Gaske also had 19 pars on the first day. The junior had a 79 (+8) in the first round. He improved by seven strokes in Round 2, finishing at one-over (72). Gaske eagled the par-five fourth hole in the second round, the Bulldogs' first eagle this season.
Brueckner and Gaske are both tied for 32nd. They enter the final round at nine-over (151).
Angus Montgomery finished with GU's most pars on the first day with 21. He also improved from his first round to his second round. The junior was seven strokes over par in Round 1, followed by a 75 (+4) in the second round. He is tied for 40th with a total of 153 (+11).
"Ryan, Will and Gus also bounced back the second round and helped us post the third best score in the second round, ahead of Washington and Oregon, two great programs," Gray said. "It shows the team members they can compete with those top programs."
Tyler Munetake is tied for 65th after the first two rounds. His first day total of 160 (+18) included a 78 (+7) and an 82 (+11). The freshman had four birdies and 17 pars on Day 1.
The Zags are 33-over with a total of 601. The team had a 310 in the first round and improved by 19 strokes in the second round with a 291. Gonzaga's 26 birdies were the third most on the first day.
Oregon State leads the Husky Invitational after two rounds. The Beavers have a five-stroke lead over Washington and Oregon at 10-over (578). OSU had back-to-back rounds of 289.
Washington's Corey Pereira and Sean Crocker of USC top the leaderboard at five-under (137). Both shot 69 (-2) in the first round and 68 (-3) in the second. Two other golfers are under par at four-under.
"While we didn't play our best today, we did a fantastic job staying positive and fighting for every shot," Gray said. "We have a chance to climb the leaderboard tomorrow with a good round. We're in 10th, three shots out of seventh and seven shots out of sixth. If the wind blows again tomorrow, which it's supposed to, the leaderboard will change quite a bit."
Playing as an individual, David Ganz is tied for seventh after two rounds at the Husky Individual on the Prospector Golf Course at the Suncadia Resort. Keeping with the trend of the team, the sophomore improved from his first round to his second. He followed a five-over round (77), with a 73 (+1) in the second. Ganz is six strokes off of first place with 10 pars and two birdies on Day 1.
The third round begins for Gonzaga Tuesday morning at 8:35. Walsh will be the first to tee off on hole 10. Live scoring for the Husky Invitational and Husky Individual are available on GoZags.com.
