SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The Gonzaga women's basketball team fell at Santa Clara, 71-64, despite a career-high and game-high 28 points from Jill Barta Thursday.

Barta's 28 points were the most scored by a Zag since Haiden Palmer had 32 points against Loyola Marymount on Jan. 23, 2014. Barta connected on 9 of her 18 shots from the field and made all eight of her free-throw attempts. It was the freshman's 15th double-digit scoring game and second 20-point game of the season.

The Broncos' (16-5, 7-3 West Coast Conference) 71 points were a season-high for a GU opponent this season. Their 25 made field goals and 18 assists were also the most by a Zag opponent. Santa Clara's 47 percent shooting from the field and 54.5 percent (6-of-11) from three-point range joined the highs for a Gonzaga opponent this season.

The Bulldogs were held to a season-low 27 rebounds, while SCU had 39. It was only the third time GU was outrebounded this season, but the second by the Broncos. Santa Clara had a slim 43-40 edge in the Zags' 53-44 win in Spokane on Jan. 2.

Taylor Berry led the Broncos with 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field. Savanna Hanson and Morgan McGwire contributed 14 and 13 points. McGwire added seven rebounds and four assists.

In a game that featured two ties and two lead changes, Santa Clara led for 36 minutes and trailed for only 18 seconds. The Broncos led 11-8 after the first quarter, before GU took its only lead, 16-15, on a three-pointer from Georgia Stirton with 5:43 left in the second quarter. SCU had a 25-23 advantage at halftime.

The Broncos built a 10-point lead in the third quarter and led 43-46 entering the final quarter. SCU had its largest lead of the game, 71-54, with 45 seconds left in regulation. Gonzaga closed the game on a 10-0 run.

The Zags (14-8, 6-4 WCC) shot 35.1 percent from the field and 7-of-25 (28 percent) from behind-the-arc. Gonzaga made 17 of its 20 free-throws, while SCU was 15-of-19. The Bulldogs forced Santa Clara into 25 turnovers, while committing 19.

The Zags got 52 points from their freshmen as Laura Stockton matched her career-high with 14 points and Zhané Templeton had 10. Kiara Kudron grabbed seven rebounds and Emma Stach had three assists.

Gonzaga remains on the road and travels to San Francisco Saturday. The Dons (13-8, 4-6) cruised to a 90-69 victory over Portland Thursday. The Bulldogs beat USF in the first meeting this season, 68-47, on Dec. 31. Saturday's game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
