BERKELEY, Calif.--For the second year in a row, two Gonzaga men's tennis players reached the Round of 32 at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regionals in Berkeley, California.
Ruadhan O'Sullivan and Vincent Rettke each won two singles matches Thursday to advance in the main bracket. O'Sullivan opened the tournament with a strong two-set win over Washington's Wendell Watanabe, and then he downed another Pac-12 foe in California's Gunther Matta. Rettke, meanwhile, beat a pair of West Coast Conference opponents with a two-set win over Saint Mary's Jacob Lagman and a hard-fought three-setter against Ryan Marker of San Francisco. In that contest, two sets went to tiebreaks as Rettke took the second set 7-6 (4) before winning the final one 6-4.
Gonzaga has now seen at least one player reach the Round of 32 every year since 2010. Two made it last season.
Freshman Sam Feit made it three Bulldogs in the Round of 64, winning his tournament opener in consecutive 6-3 sets over Ross Watson of Pacific. He then fell to fellow WCC competitor Felix Fan of Portland, ending his main bracket run. With Feit's advancement, the Zags have now put three individuals into the Round of 64 during six of the last seven years.
Three more Bulldogs fell in the first round of the main bracket with freshmen Simon Homedes Dualde and Kyle Everly going three sets each. Homedes Dualde took the middle set off Sacramento State's Kasparas Zemaitelis before falling, while Everly won the first set against Stanford's Roy Lederman. Lederman won the next two, but the Bulldog did force an extra game in the second.
In doubles play, two Gonzaga pairs advanced to the Round of 32 as well. O'Sullivan and Ronzai Saurombe combined to down the Hornets' Chris Clayton and Louis Chabut 8-4, while Everly and Rettke beat San Francisco's Marker and Jerod Mah by a similar tally. In the Round of 32, O'Sullivan and Saurombe will face the tournament's No. 2 seeded pair while Everly and Rettke play the top-seeded duo.
The Bulldogs will continue the USTA/ITA Northwest Regionals on Friday, Oct. 14. Doubles play will begin at 8:30 a.m. on the California campus, while main bracket singles action starts later in the day.
