Oct. 16, 2016 SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The Gonzaga Bulldogs fell on the road to San Francisco in golden goal format in the 103rd minute of the second overtime on Sunday, 2-1.
Jalen Crisler had broken the 0-0 tie for the Zags at 76:21 when he finished a Jakob Granlund corner kick for his third goal of the year with a header through the center of the frame, tying the team lead in goals. For the first time this season the Zags let a lead in the final 20 minutes slip away, as the Dons' David Garrett scored the equalizer at 85:52. Josh Smith scored the game winner at 104:04 when he headed home Aaron Lamboardi's corner kick into the right corner of the net.
The Zags led in shots by a slight edge, 17-16, but trailed in shots on goal, 4-5. The Dons took a huge advantage, 14-4 in corner kicks. The Zags best chance to win came nine minutes into the first overtime as Christo Michaelson's shot bounced off the crossbar. Michaelson missed again wide in the second overtime before USF ended the match.
"In wet conditions, it was an overall very even game," Gonzaga head coach Einar Thorarinsson said. "Obviously that was one we would have liked to have, but they got more aggressive after our goal and on that occasion we could not clear the ball. Our defene played well on the match and Christo Michaelson's shot early in the first overtime was a great chance for us to end it."
In a game that marked GU's first overtime loss this season and only second over tilt of the year, the teams played a close first half and match. The Zags had three shots in the first 10 minutes of the match, and two more for the remainder of the half. Leading up to Crisler's goal, Granlund had a shot saved and missed two high.
Ben Willis stayed busy for the Zags, making three saves in 103 minutes, but taking the tough luck loss.
The Zags fell to 7-5-1 and 1-2-0 in the WCC, while San Francisco won their fourth straight to go to 6-6 and 2-1-0 in the conference. Gonzaga will take a week off from conference play, but remain on the road, as they battle nationally ranked Washington in Seattle on Friday, October 21, at 6 pm.
