SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Despite outshooting San Francisco 17-6, the Gonzaga women's soccer team fell on the road, 2-1, in their penultimate match of the season Sunday.
The Zags had several quality chances in the match, placing six shots on goal, but surrendered a costly early goal. San Francisco (7-11-0, 3-5-0 West Coast Conference) converted twice on three shots on frame.
"This one hurt badly," GU Head Coach Amy Edwards said. "We gave up the early goal on a mistake on a corner, so we had to take many risks to get the goal back in the second half. We created many opportunities in the second half, but we spill the ball on a save and allow them to go up two. This puts us under more pressure and we find a way to get one back, and even have two great chances in the final two minutes but do not convert. We out-competed USF today, but unfortunately we are punished by two mistakes. This team deserved more today."
The Dons' Nicole Kelsey headed in a corner kick from Amanda Whittle 98 seconds into the match. Kelsey's first goal of the season came off of one of four corner kicks by USF in the game. Whittle now has five assists this season, along with 15 points.
In the 76th minute, San Francisco's Melissa Ellis connected on a rebound off a save. Rosie Kerstetter took a shot that the Bulldogs' Sarah Swanson made a diving save to stop, but Ellis kicked in the deflection from about 10 yards out.
Gonzaga's Karley Baggerly scored her sixth goal of the season in the 88th minute. She brought in a long ball from Aliyah Miller and struck it near post past the USF keeper. Baggerly is third in GU program history with 24 career goals. It was Miller's second assist of the season and third in her career.
Olivia Camera made five saves for San Francisco, while Swanson had one. The Zags (6-9-2, 2-6-0 WCC) took 11 shots in the second half. Gonzaga took five corner kicks in the match.
The Bulldogs finish their season at No. 5 BYU (15-2-1, 6-1-1) Saturday. Live video and stats will be available on GoZags.com.
