SEATTLE, Wash. - The Gonzaga men's rowing team completed its second-to-last regatta of the fall season Sunday in the 37th Annual Head of the Lake in Seattle. The 5,000-meter course spanned parts of both Lake Union and Lake Washington. The course began in Lake Union, then crossed through Portage Bay and Union Bay before making a turn in Lake Washington and finishing back in Union Bay.
The Zags entered three boats in the event, the Varsity 8, Junior Varsity 8, and Third Varsity 8 crews.
The Varsity 8 crew of Max Baker, Jack Oberle, Cole Garcia, Ian Melder, Atticus Patterson, Brandon Fairhurst, Connor Murray, Matt Peterson, and Walker Capra-Smith opened the event and took fourth place with a time of 17:24.53. They downed boats from Western Washington, Washington State, and Oregon. The Junior Varsity 8 boat of Ben Foos, Eric Engel, Collin Murray, Max Sombrowski, Kale Reichersamer, Anthony Adamek, Zach Weber, Dominic Hutt, and Thomas Jamrozik took fifth with a finish of 17:51.42, ahead of the same three schools as the Varsity 8. Finally, the Third Varsity 8 boat of Douglas Kempthorne, Mason Matteoni, Jackson Wills, Joshua Hoidn, Charley Nordin, Coe Carter, Kyle Jangard, Noah Macia, and Brandon Niblock finished in fifth at 19:28.69, just 29 seconds back of Washington State.
"Racing was solid today. I thought we could have attacked earlier in all the races", Gonzaga head coach Dan Gehn said. "This group is still young and learning as they go."
The Zags have one regatta left, as they will take on Washington State next weekend in the fall finale in the Head of the Snake in Pullman, Wash.
