DALLAS - The Gonzaga men's basketball team held serve with No. 16 SMU until a late run put the Mustangs ahead for good on Saturday night in Dallas, Texas.
Gonzaga went up by four on a floater from Kyle Wiltjer with 11:50 remaining in the second half, but SMU's Nic Moore went on a scoring spree that was part of a 23-8 run over seven minutes. Moore ended up with 25 points and 11 assists with 18 points and seven assists in the second half.
Domantas Sabonis had another monster game for the Zags with his 16th double-double of the season on 20 points and 16 rebounds. That marked his fourth straight double-double and 10th in the last 12 games. He was 9-for-14 from the field and added three assists. Fourteen of his 20 points came after halftime.
Sophomore guard Silas Melson added 12 points on four three-pointers and Kyle Dranginis had 11 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Josh Perkins had nine points and a team-high seven assists.
SMU started fast in the first half, taking a 10-5 lead on a layup by Ben Moore, but Gonzaga responded early with a 12-2 run, highlighted by threes from Melson and Dranginis and a pair of buckets by Sabonis. The Mustangs then made a run of their own to end the half outscoring GU 12-1 to take a 30-27 lead.
Sabonis started the second half with two more buckets to put GU back in the lead. The teams exchanged leads before Perkins drilled a three and then found Sabonis down load for a dunk to make it 41-36.
The loss drops Gonzaga to 20-6 on the season and snaps a six-game winning streak overall and four-game road winning streak.
GU will be back in action on Thursday at home inside the McCarthey Athletic Center against Pacific at 6 p.m. Senior Night will follow on Saturday when Saint Mary's comes to town.
