Feb. 19, 2016

NEW ORLEANS -- The Gonzaga women's and men's cross country programs placed a record number of selections to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic lists Friday. Jessica Mildes, Shelby Mills and Matthew Crichlow all received the Academic All-American honor.

For the second straight season, the GU women's and men's programs were also both recognized as All-Academic teams.

Overall, 205 women's teams and 171 men's teams earned All-Academic honors. Teams must have a combined 3.0 team grade point average to receive the recognition. The Gonzaga men had a 3.25 cumulative GPA, while the women achieved the 34th-best GPA on the list at 3.59 GPA.

Gonzaga is also coming off of arguably its best cross country season in program history. The Zag women finished 25th in the first-ever team appearance by GU at the National Championships. Mills was the top WCC finisher at both NCAA West Regionals and NCAA Nationals. Crichlow also became the first men's runner in program history to run at nationals.

Mildes, an accounting major, was one of 20 women on the 160-runner list that boasts a perfect 4.00 GPA. Mills has a 3.37 GPA and her major is in Biology. Crichlow was one of 90 runners on the men's list. The Masters of Initial Teaching student has a 3.43 cumulative GPA.

In order for a student-athlete to qualify for the honor, they must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 and finished in the top-25 (or 10 percent) at regionals or as an All-American at the national meet.

Mills led the Gonzaga women to a sixth place team finish, after crossing the line in seventh as an individual at the NCAA West Regional. The senior's finish automatically qualified her for the 2015 NCAA Cross Country National Championships. Mildes came in 21st place in the women's race with a time of 21:09.4. Crichlow's 18th place finish was the best for the GU men in the past 20 years. The redshirt senior crossed the line at 31:30.3. He then ran the 10th-fastest time in program history on a 10,000-meter course at nationals at 31:16.8.
