SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Three Gonzaga men's basketball players were named to the 2016 West Coast Conference All-Academic Team, league officials announced on Friday.
Seniors Kyle Wiltjer and Kyle Dranginis and sophomore Domantas Sabonis each earned the league distinction, which recognizes the combination of athletic and academic success. It was the first time each had earned the honor in their Gonzaga careers. It also marks the first time GU has had three on the first team in a season since the 1999-00 squad had four with Mike Nilson, Ryan Floyd, Matt Santangelo and Jimmy Tricco earn the award.
Sabonis, who was also named a CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree last week, has a 3.46 grade-point average in sport management. The forward is having a huge season, ranking second on the team at 17.7 points per game and leading the team with 11.6 rebounds per game, 17 double-doubles and a .621 field goal percentage.
Wiltjer, who owns a 3.76 GPA while pursuing his Master of Business Administration, is also the WCC's leading scorer at 21.3 points per game. He's also made a team high 70 three pointers and is second on the team at 6.4 rebounds per game.
Dranginis has posted a 3.88 GPA while pursuing a Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership. In his final season in a Zag uniform, the guard has been the jack-of-all-trades for GU with 6.4 points per game, 4.4 rebounds per game, 3.3 assists per game and 1.0 steals per game. He's third on the team with 30 three-pointers this season.
Gonzaga will be back on the McCarthey Athletic Center floor for the final time this season on Senior Night on Saturday against Saint Mary's. The game will tip off at 7 p.m. on ESPN2.
