Gonzaga Upsets No. 22 BYU on Senior Day

SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Gonzaga women's basketball team snapped No. 22 BYU's 16-game win streak in a 73-55 upset on Senior Day inside the Kennel Saturday.

A strong fourth quarter gave the Zags (18-12, 10-8 West Coast Conference) the push they needed, outscoring BYU 33-13 in the final period. The Bulldogs closed the game on a 19-5 run.

After completing the regular season, Gonzaga will be the fifth-seed in next week's West Coast Conference Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev. The Bulldogs face fourth-seeded Santa Clara in the quarterfinals Thursday.

On Saturday, GU matched its fewest amount of turnovers in the Lisa Fortier era with seven. The Zags forced BYU into 16 turnovers.

Jill Barta notched her third double-double of the season leading Gonzaga with a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds. The freshman was one of three Zags in double digits. Cheslek put up 14 points and grabbed nine boards, while Emma Stach added 12 points and three assists. Barta and Cheslek combined for 22 points in the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs held BYU scoreless for the first five minutes of the game, but didn't get their first made field goal until the 5:31 mark of the opening quarter with a Georgia Stirton three. The senior's shot from deep was part of a 12-2 Gonzaga run to start the game. GU hit 3-of-5 from behind-the-arc in the first period and took a 14-8 lead into the second quarter.

Gonzaga opened up an 11-point lead early in the second quarter, but the Cougars clawed their way back within two. The Zags took a 28-24 lead into the halftime break. The third quarter featured nine of the game's 12 lead changes. The Cougars outscored GU 18-12 in the quarter had a 42-40 lead entering the final period. BYU had its largest lead of the game, three points, twice in the third.

In the final quarter, Gonzaga made 10 of its 12 (83.3 percent) shots from the field and held the Cougars to 4-of-11 (36.4 percent). The Bulldogs turned the ball over only once in the last 10 minutes, while BYU committed five turnovers. GU made 11 of its 12 free-throws in the fourth quarter.

The Cougars (24-5, 16-2 WCC) led the game for 4:33, while Gonzaga led the conference's regular season champions for 30:24. The Bulldogs outrebounded BYU, 37-31. GU turned 13 offensive rebounds into a 13-0 advantage in second chance points. The Zags dominated in the paint, outscoring BYU, 34-16.

The Bulldogs finished 17-of-23 (74 percent) from the free-throw line. BYU was 13-for-19 (68 percent). Both teams made six three-pointers. GU was 6-of-16, while the Cougars were 6-of-18.

Kylie Maeda made five of BYU's six threes. She led the Cougars with 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field. Kalani Purcell contributed 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Gonzaga and Santa Clara's quarterfinal will be the last game on the opening day of the WCC Tournament. Thursday's tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. inside the Orleans Arena. GU split the regular season matchups with the Broncos (22-7, 13-5). Live broadcasts of Thursday's game will be available on TheW.tv and BYUtv.
