PULLMAN, Wash. -- Gonzaga men's track student-athlete William Thompson placed second in the men's 3,000 meters at the Cougar Indoor Saturday.

Thompson crossed the line at 8:52.66. His previous personal record was 8:58.81 set at the Idaho Invitational in the season-opening meet on Jan. 16. Teammate Andy Thomas also finished in the top 10 with a time of 9:05.31 in seventh.

"Will ran very strong over last 300 meters to go from fifth place to second," GU head coach Pat Tyson said. "It was a very good confidence booster for the Portland native."

In the women's mile, Katy Culver shaved nine seconds off of her personal record. Her time of 5:11.08 was good for fifth, and well ahead of her 5:20.52 previous best set at the Idaho Invitational.

Claren Fraher ran a lifetime best of 2:18.48 in the women's 800 meters. She placed fourth in the event. Brianna Vasquez bested her own 200-meter indoor program record. The freshman ran a 27.50 and finished 10th Saturday. Molly Foster won her heat of the 600 meters and placed fifth with a time of 1:47.60.

"We had a very good day for a lot of our developing athletes," GU women's head coach Patty Ley said. "We got the improvements we were looking for this week, all the milers improved by nine to 10 seconds, and this crew will soon settle in for an extended training cycle before the outdoor season with some nice marks to build from."

Gonzaga wraps up its indoor regular season schedule with the Husky Classic next weekend. The Zags return to the Dempsey Center in Seattle for the third time this season.

"We'll be bringing our high-end men, led by Troy Fraley, and our high-end women, led by Shelby Mills," Tyson said. "It's hard to believe that next month we start the outdoor season and the road to Lawrence, Kan., and hopefully Eugene!"
