Women's Basketball Season Ends in WNIT Second Round

SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Gonzaga women's basketball team fell to Utah, 92-77, in the second round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament Monday.

The Utes (18-14) used a 20-5 run in the third quarter to pull away with the road win. Utah made nine of its 13 shots during a key third quarter stretch, including a trio of three-pointers. The Utes made 10 of their 24 shots from behind-the-arc in the game and finished 46 percent from the field. Utah was also 24-of-28 from the free-throw line.

Utah's starting five all finished in double figures led by Paige Crozon's game-high 22 points. She was 5-of-8 from the field, including 4-for-7 from three-point range. Crozon also made all eight of her free-throw attempts. Malia Nawahine made three three-pointers and added 17 points. Tanaeya Boclair had 13 points and five assists. Emily Potter recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Danielle Rodriguez contributed 11 points. Erika Bean also had five assists.

Gonzaga led for the first seven minutes of the game after jumping out to a 13-5 lead capped by a three-point play from Jill Barta. The Utes went on an 11-2 run and the quarter closed with the score tied at 20. Utah led by five points two minutes into the second quarter, but a 10-2 GU run gave the Bulldogs the lead back, 32-30, with 5:27 left in the first half.

With the score tied at 34 with 3:51 remaining in the second quarter, Utah hit three straight three-pointers and led 43-36 at halftime.

After trailing 66-46 with 2:47 left in the third quarter, the Zags used a 15-3 run to trim the Utah lead to eight points with 8:29 remaining in regulation. GU would come no closer than eight points over the final eight minutes.

Gonzaga (19-14) shot 34 percent from the field in the game. The Bulldogs made 6-of-15 from behind-the-perimeter and 23-of-30 from the free-throw line.

The Zags got a combined 46 points from Barta (18), Laura Stockton (15) and Emma Stach (13). Barta finished one rebound shy of her fifth double-double of the season. Stockton had a team-high four assists. Shelby Cheslek blocked four shots.

The Utes outrebounded GU, 43-40, and had a 34-24 scoring edge in the paint. The Bulldogs turned the ball over nine times, while Utah committed 12 turnovers.

Utah advances to the third round of the WNIT and will play at Oregon (22-10) Wednesday at 6 p.m.
