March 29, 2016 CHICAGO -- Sophomore forward Domantas Sabonis was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team for the Midwest Region after his outstanding performances in three games.
Sabonis averaged 19.7 points and 14.3 rebounds in those three games, helping lead Gonzaga to its seventh Sweet 16 appearance and fourth as a double-digit seed -- the most ever by any NCAA school. He turned in a double-double in all three games, giving him 23 double-doubles for the year.
Sabonis opened the tournament with 21 points and 16 rebounds against Seton Hall, followed by a 19-point, 10-rebound effort against All-American Jakob Poeltl and Utah in the Second Round. Then in the Sweet 16, he scored 19 points and grabbed 17 rebounds while going 8-for-12 from the field. For the week, he was 25-for-44 (.568) from the field and 8-for-10 (.800) from the free throw line.
Sabonis, who earned All-West Coast Conference and NABC All-District First Team honors, ranks second on the team at 17.6 points per game and leads the WCC with 11.8 rebounds per game (No. 6 nationally) and 23 double-doubles (No. 5 nationally). He's second in the league with a .611 field goal percentage. Sabonis has scored in double figures 32 times and had 20-plus in 12 of those contests.
In addition, he was also named a CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team honoree as well as a CoSIDA Academic All-District first-teamer and a WCC All-Academic first-teamer.
