March 3, 2016 AUSTIN, Texas â€" Sophomore forward Domantas Sabonis brought home one of the nation's highest honors when he was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American on Thursday, College Sports Information Directors of America officials announced.
Sabonis was named to the Second Team and becomes the eighth Gonzaga men's basketball player overall to earn the award. He's just the third sophomore in program history to be recognized at the Academic All-America level and one of just four sophomores nationwide this season that earned the distinction on the list comprised of three five-player teams.
Sabonis, who was named a CoSIDA Academic All-District first-teamer and a WCC All-Academic first-teamer, carries a 3.46 grade-point average and is majoring in sport management. On the court, he is having an equally impressive season, ranking second on the team at 17.2 points per game and leading the league with 11.9 rebounds per game (No. 6 nationally) and 19 double-doubles (No. 8 nationally). He's second in the league with a .602 field goal percentage. Sabonis has scored in double figures 23 times and had 20-plus in 10 of those contests.
Sabonis is GU's first Academic All-American since Kelly Olynyk was named to the first team in 2013. Jeff Brown and Bryce McPhee each earned the honor three times, Jarrod Davis and Blake Stepp each twice and Jim McPhee, Dan Dickau and Olynyk each once.
