FORT WORTH, Texas--The Gonzaga University baseball team wrapped up its three-game series at #7/9 TCU Sunday, falling 16-1 at Lupton Stadium in Fort Worth.
The two clubs were scoreless through the first two innings. GU starter Eli Morgan retired his first five batters faced and didn't allow a hit through the first eight, while the Zags saw a scoring chance in the second. Second baseman Justin Jacobs led the inning off with an infield single, and two batters later Tyler Frost knobbed a base knock through the left side, moving Jacobs to second. The next two batters made outs, however, ending the threat.
In the third, the Zags also had two batters reach but were again stymied by TCU starter Rex Hill. The Horned Frogs broke onto the scorecard during the bottom of the frame, plating five runs on six hits. After Morgan retired leadoff hitter Dane Steinhagen, the next seven batters reached, six of them via the hit. Mason Hesse tallied the big hit, ripping a two-RBI triple.
TCU batted around once again in the fourth inning, sending 14 men to the plate and scoring 10 runs. The Zags used three pitchers in the inning with Sam Hellinger replacing Morgan and Calvin LeBrun replacing Hellinger.
After the fourth, the squads began to slowly replace their starters with Jimmy Sinatro coming in to catch for Joey Harris in the fifth and both teams making numerous substitutions in the sixth. The Bulldogs scratched one run across in that sixth inning when Jack Krauel drew a bases-loaded walk for an RBI. The free base brought home designated hitter Patrick Chung.
TCU scored one more in the bottom of the seventh, bringing the final score to 16-1.
Bulldog Bites:
- Krauel tallied his fourth RBI of the season with a pinch hit walk in the sixth. Sunday marked just his second game of the year; he drove in three RBIs Feb. 26 versus Texas Southern. He's one of 12 Bulldogs with multiple RBIs in 2016.
- Gonzaga's 16 runs allowed are the most the Zags have given up in five years; they last allowed more than 15 runs March 29, 2011, during a 17-11 loss to Washington State. Normally, the Zags have been on the other side of big scorelines as the Zags themselves have scored over 15 runs twice already this season.
Next Up:
Gonzaga (5-6) will face another ranked opponent in a few days, traveling to No. 14/16 Arkansas.
