BANDON, Ore. -- The Gonzaga men's golf team sits in fifth place on the team leaderboard following the opening round of the seventh annual Bandon Dunes Championships Sunday.

The Bulldogs finished 16-over-par (300) in the first round on the Bandon Trails Course. GU is four strokes out of the top three and 10 from first place.

"I'm happy with the way the team fought all day today," GU Head Coach Robert Gray said. "Bandon Trails is a tough course then the wind and rain came in for the last nine holes, making scoring very difficult."

Sean Walsh led the Zags with an even-par (71) Day 1 score. He is in a tie for fourth place after having two birdies and 14 pars. The senior went one-under on the front-nine and one-over on the back.

"Sean got off to great start then held it together when the weather showed up," Gray said. "His past experiences here definitely helped him with understanding the patience needed to play well in those conditions."

Ben DuBois is tied for 18th at four-over (75). The sophomore was two-over on the front-nine and two-over on the back-nine. He had 12 pars in the first round.

"Ben came in with our second best round of the team," Gray said. "He also played steady when the weather rolled in."

Angus Montgomery is also in the top-25 in a tie for 23rd. He finished with a team-high three birdies, all on the front-nine. The junior carded a 76 (+5) Sunday.

"Angus finished with three straight bogies," Gray said. "He wasn't driving the ball great but kept it in position to score. He just left himself in a few tough spots to make par from on those final three holes."

Freshman Tyler Munetake, playing as an individual, is in a tie for 35th at six-over (77).

Ryan Gaske (78, +7) and David Ganz (82, +11) are tied for 41st and 64th. Gaske was one-under with two birdies after the front-nine.

"We've got ourselves in sight of a real good finish this week," Gray said. "Going into our final two rounds, we'll need to clean up some of the mistakes we made today and execute shots better to stay in the top five or better. Not allowing the weather and quirky bounces that coincide with links style golf get to us mentally will also be very important."

Missouri and Clemson lead the team leaderboard at six-over (290). Three players top the individual leaderboard at two-under (69). No other golfers shot under-par.

The second round begins with a shotgun start Monday morning at 8:30. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
