DI-AAA ADA Recognizes Wiltjer, Cheslek

April 18, 2016

CLEVELAND â€" Senior Kyle Wiltjer was named the DI-AAA ADA Men's Scholar Athlete of the Year and senior Shelby Cheslek was named to the Women's Scholar Athlete Team announced by the DI-AAA Athletics Directors Association on Monday.

The honors for Wiltjer and Cheslek make Gonzaga one of just three schools who placed at least one representative on both the men's and women's scholar-athlete teams alongside American and Florida Gulf Coast.

Wiltjer had a fantastic season both on the floor and off the floor where he was named an Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American, a Senior CLASS All-American and WCC All-Academic first teamer. In the classroom, he is working on his Master of Business Administration degree and owns a 3.76 grade-point average. Wiltjer led the team with 20.4 point per game and his 736 total points this season is the fourth-highest single-season point total in Gonzaga history. He also led the team with 90 three-pointers, tied for sixth all-time at Gonzaga, and was second on the team in rebounding at 6.3 per game. In two years at Gonzaga, he scored 1,374 points, which ranks in the schools top 20 all-time. Wiltjer also earned All-WCC First Team and NABC All-District First Team honors.

Cheslek put together a record-breaking season herself, grabbing the Gonzaga all-time blocks record at 213 for her career. She also ended her career ranking second all-time at GU in rebounding with 932. A WCC All-Academic selection, Cheslek is working on her Master of Business Administration degree and boasts a 3.62 cumulative GPA. For the season, she averaged 9.7 points and 8.6 rebounds per game this season. Her 1.97 blocks per game ranked first in the WCC and her .477 field goal percentage ranked sixth.

"Our Association congratulates this year's scholar-athlete award winners," stated Tim Hall, chair of the Division I-AAA ADA Scholar-Athlete Team Selection Committee and athletics director at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. "We pride ourselves in honoring deserving student-athletes who exemplify I-AAA athletics and this year is no different, as we recognize the scholar-athletes of the year and the postgraduate scholarship recipients for their outstanding accomplishments."

Basketball players from all Division I-AAA ADA member institutions are eligible for these prestigious awards. Each of the nominees was required to have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) in undergraduate study and have been a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletics credentials. Nominated student-athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games listed on the nomination form. To be eligible for nomination to the Scholar-Athlete Team, he/she must have reached junior academic standing at their institution (ineligible athletics transfers are not eligible).
