SAN FRANCISCO -It didn't end without a fight, but the Gonzaga's win streak did end at 11 matches Saturday as San Francisco beat the Bulldogs' women's tennis team 4-2 in San Francisco.
The Dons took an early 1-0 advantage by winning the doubles point despite a 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles by Melanie Yates and Alex Bourguignon. Yates and Bourguignon won the first doubles match to finish, but San Francisco countered with a pair of 6-2 wins on the other two courts for the point.
Gonzaga struck back to begin the hard-fought singles contests. Three singles contests went to a third frame, and seven sets saw either an extra game or a tiebreak. The Zags won the first two singles contests to finish as Domonique Garley and Nevada Apollo gave GU its two points on the day. At No. 6 singles, Garley extended her personal win streak to 12 with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Hanna Borjeson. She's now tied for the team lead with 12 singles wins in dual play. At No. 3 singles, Apollo gave the Bulldogs a lead with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Genevieve McCloskey. It's her 10th win of the dual season, 20th overall this year, and third in a row.
San Francisco countered with the next two singles contests to finish. Atop the singles lineup, Sophie Whittle fell in two sets to Andrea Ka, getting swept in the first frame but forcing a tiebreak before going down 7-6 (5) in the second. At No. 2 singles, Samantha Polayes won her first set against Thyra Taune 1-6, but the Don took the next two at 6-1 and 7-5 to put USF up at 3-2.
The remaining two matches both went to third sets, and both those third sets went into tiebreaks. At No. 4 singles, Bourguignon lost the race to seven points against Shanna Dos Santos to give the Dons the clinching point. Graciela Rosas' No. 5 singles contest, which was tied at 4-4 in the third-set tiebreak, was halted once San Francisco clinched the match.
With the loss, the Zags (12-2, 2-1 WCC) see their record 11-match win streak snapped; they last lost a dual match January 17 at then-No. 51 Utah. They look to start another streak Sunday, April 3, at Santa Clara. That match with the Broncos will begin at 11:00 a.m. at Degheri Tennis Center in Santa Clara, Calif.
