SPOKANE, Wash. â€" Shelby Cheslek signed with the Phoenix Mercury Tuesday and will begin training camp with the WNBA team Sunday.

Cheslek started in 115 of her 134 appearances as a Zag. The graduating senior broke the program record for blocks in a career. Her 213 blocks ranks seventh in West Coast Conference history. The Pullman, Wash. native is also second in program history with 932 rebounds. She was near the league lead in blocks and rebounds all this season.

"We are very excited for Shelby to be heading to training camp with the Phoenix Mercury," GU women's basketball Head Coach Lisa Fortier said. "She has worked so hard for the past five years at Gonzaga, and has developed into such a tough player. I'm looking forward to watching her professional career unfold, and know that she is going to continue to make us proud with the way she works, communicates, and chooses to have such a positive attitude every day."

After being named honorable mention academic All-Conference twice, Cheslek was tabbed to the league's All-Academic team this year. She graduated with a Business degree last year, and is wrapping up her master's in Business Administration this year. She was recently named to the DI-AAA Athletics Directors Association Women's Scholar Athlete Team with a 3.62 cumulative GPA.

"I am so excited to be invited to the Phoenix Mercury training camp and have this opportunity," Cheslek said. "It has been my dream to play professionally since I first picked up a basketball in kindergarten. I've worked for this moment for years. It is nearly indescribable. I will definitely give it my all."

Cheslek becomes the sixth Zag in school history to be invited to a WNBA training camp. Kayla Standish and Katelan Redmon were the last in 2012. Standish went to the Minnesota Lynx training camp after being selected as the 19th pick in the draft, and Redmon was the 36th pick by the New York Liberty.
