April 7, 2016 SPOKANE, Wash. -- Sophomore forward Domantas Sabonis has declared for the NBA Draft, he announced Thursday. He is exploring his options without hiring an agent at this time.
"After a great deal of thought and discussion with family, I have decided to forego my final two years of eligibility and declare for the 2016 NBA Draft," Sabonis said. "This has been a very difficult decision for me because of the amazing two years I have had at Gonzaga. I want to thank the coaching staff, my teammates, and all of our great fans for making this such an incredible experience for me. Zag Nation welcomed me with open arms and made me feel at home in Spokane and, for that, I could not be more grateful."
Sabonis is currently the Gonzaga all-time leader in career field goal percentage at .632. In just two seasons, he scored 1,002 points to become the 41st player in school history to score 1,000 points and he grabbed 694 rebounds to pass current NBA player Robert Sacre for eighth all-time.
"[Domantas] is as impressive of a person and player as I've ever coached," Gonzaga head coach Mark Few said. "He has an insatiable desire to get better."
A CoSIDA Second Team Academic All-American, AP Honorable Mention All-American and NCAA All-Tournament Midwest Region selection, Sabonis capped his fantastic season helping the Zags reach the Sweet 16.
Sabonis, who also earned All-West Coast Conference and NABC All-District First Team honors, ranked second on the team at 17.6 points per game and led the WCC with 11.8 rebounds per game (No. 6 nationally) and 23 double-doubles (No. 5 nationally). He ranked second in the league with a .611 field goal percentage. Sabonis scored in double figures 32 times and had 20-plus in 12 of those contests.
In the NCAA Tournament, Sabonis helped Gonzaga reach a Sweet 16 in each of his two seasons with an Elite 8 appearance in 2015. In this year's three tournament games, he averaged 19.7 points and 14.3 rebounds, the highest rebounding average of any player that appeared in at least two games.
Sabonis opened the tournament with 21 points and 16 rebounds against Seton Hall, followed by a 19-point, 10-rebound effort against All-American Jakob Poeltl and Utah in the Second Round. Then in the Sweet 16, he scored 19 points and grabbed 17 rebounds while going 8-for-12 from the field. For the week, he was 25-for-44 (.568) from the field and 8-for-10 (.800) from the free throw line.
Earlier this season, he was also named a CoSIDA Academic All-District first-teamer and a WCC All-Academic first-teamer.
