EUGENE, Ore.--The Gonzaga University baseball squad completed a two-game sweep of Oregon Tuesday night, beating the Ducks 5-4 with a pair of home runs and a pair of quality relief performances at PK Park in Eugene.
Oregon led the game off with a crooked number, scoring all four of its runs off GU starter Gage Burland in the first. Three of those runs came in on a two-RBI Tim Susnara single, the last of which scored due to an errant throw by center fielder Tyler Frost. The Ducks' final run of the frame -- and the game -- came on a Carson Breshears single, once again to center.
The home team held a 4-0 lead until the third inning, but the Zags chipped away with a pair of runs on three hits. Right fielder Jace VanDeBrake gave Gonzaga its first base runner of the night with a one-out single up the middle, and second baseman Jake Roberts followed up with a shot over the left field fence for a two-run home run. After cutting the lead to 4-2, the Zags saw the next two batters reach base before a double play ended the inning.
Gonzaga took the lead in the fourth with three more runs via the long ball. Frost led the frame off with a double to right field, and two batters later, catcher Joey Harris added another base runner with a walk. In the next at bat, designated hitter Nick Brooks blasted a shot straight out to center field, clearing the bases and giving Gonzaga a 5-4 advantage.
On the mound, sophomore lefty Calvin LeBrun turned in a stellar relief appearance, getting the final out of the first and holding the Ducks scoreless through one out in the eighth. He sat the Ducks down in order in the third and sixth innings while allowing only one base runner in the other four frames.
After LeBrun retired Oregon's first batter in the eighth, Hunter Wells came in and registered two straight outs to end the inning. Wells came back out for the ninth, allowing two base runners after a pair of defensive miscues, but he closed off the win with a groundout for his second save of the year.
Bulldog Bites
- LeBrun tossed a season-long 6.2 innings Tuesday night, passing his previous high of 5.0 and posting the second-longest outing of his career. As a reliever, LeBrun has a 1.65 ERA in 2016, allowing just five runs in 27.1 innings out of the bullpen while fanning 18. He picked up the win, advancing to 3-2 on the season; it's his first win since April 10 versus Portland.
- Gonzaga saw another multi-home run game Tuesday night, the team's eighth of the year. All seven have come in the last two months, and the Zags' latest was April 29 when they hit two out of the park at BYU. Gonzaga is 7-1 when hitting two home runs in a single game.
- The Zags' 7, 8, and 9 hitters -- Roberts, Brooks, and VanDeBrake -- accounted for four of Gonzaga's six hits and all five RBIs. Each scored one run and collected an extra-base hit on the night. Roberts hit his second home run of the year, his first coming April 3 at Pacific, while Brooks saw his fourth four-bagger. He's hit all four since April 19. VanDeBrake, meanwhile, went 2-for-4 with a double Tuesday night.
- One night after picking up their first win over Oregon since the Ducks reinstated baseball in 2009, Gonzaga completed the two-game sweep over their Pacific Northwest foe. The Bulldogs have now swept four multi-game series this year, winning three-game sets at UTSA, at Pacific, and versus Portland.
Mac Talk: Thoughts from Gonzaga head coach Mark Machtolf
- "Calvin pitched with big-time charisma tonight. He mixed all three pitches in the zone and really did a great job of throwing strikes."
- "Wells came in and backed up LeBrun's effort, really pitching through adversity and shutting the game down. Huge relief work out of those two after the offense did a great job of battling out of an early hole."
