May 20, 2016 SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Gonzaga women's soccer team finished its 2016 spring schedule with plenty of valuable experience for its young roster.
The Zags welcomed five opponents to Luger Field and all six dates on the slate were played at home. GU faced five opponents and hosted its annual seven-versus-seven tournament during the spring.
"This spring was successful in getting many of our players game experience," GU head coach Amy Edwards said. "The team worked diligently in creating a united unit on the field. The spring season was a challenging journey that narrowed and simplified our vision for this fall."
Gonzaga opened the spring schedule with a 1-1 draw against Montana. The Bulldogs also drew even with Montana last spring in Spokane. The Grizzlies ended their 2015 season in the Big Sky Conference semifinals with a loss to Idaho.
On April 3, GU grabbed a 1-0 victory over the 2015 Big Sky Conference regular season champions, Idaho. The Vandals went 9-0-1 in league play and finished the season with a 14-4-3 overall record.
Oregon State scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win in the final 10 seconds off of a corner kick on April 10. Later that day, Eastern Washington escaped Luger Field with a 2-1 victory. Last season, the Eagles won 12 games and finished third in the Big Sky. The following week, EWU won the Gonzaga seven-versus-seven tournament.
The Zags welcomed back alumni for the annual matchup. Shannon Strahl, Kelsey Werre, Kasey Rubosky, Heather Johnson, Susan Brown, Tori Lee, Emily Eckmann, Jordan Travis, Sarah Rhoades Cox, Catlyn Salo Terrill, Cricket Harber, Katie Spangenberg, Emma Dolcetti, Lexi Clark, Morgan Manchester, Ali Ohashi, Lori Conrad, and Sarah Hawkins Michaelson all returned for the annual event.
Gonzaga closed the spring schedule the next day against Washington. In their best performance of the spring, the Bulldogs drew even with UW, 1-1. The Huskies ended last season with a loss in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Zags' 2016 fall schedule will be released in the near future. An early look at the slate reveals a competitive non-conference schedule, preparing GU for the ever-tough West Coast Conference.
