Wiltjer Named WCC Mike Gilleran Scholar-Athlete of the Year

June 8, 2016

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- Gonzaga's Kyle Wiltjer was named the 2016 West Coast Conference Mike Gilleran male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, announced at the seventh annual WCC Honors Dinner Tuesday.

The Mike Gilleran Scholar-Athlete of the Year is selected by a vote of the WCC's Executive Council to recognize the finest accomplishments in athletics, academics and community service by individuals who have completed their collegiate eligibility. The award is named in honor of the conference's first full-time commissioner, Mike Gilleran.

Wiltjer had a fantastic season both on the floor and off the floor where he was named an Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American, a Senior CLASS All-American, DI-AAA ADA Men's Scholar Athlete of the Year, and WCC All-Academic first teamer.

In the classroom, Wiltjer graduated in May with a Master of Business Administration degree with a 3.67 grade-point average.

Wiltjer led the team with 20.4 point per game and his 736 total points this season is the fourth-highest single-season point total in Gonzaga history. He also led the team with 90 three-pointers, tied for sixth all-time at Gonzaga, and was second on the team in rebounding at 6.3 per game. In two years at Gonzaga, he scored 1,374 points, which ranks in the schools top 20 all-time. Wiltjer also earned All-WCC First Team and NABC All-District First Team honors.

As a senior, Wiltjer was named to several national player of the year watch lists, including the Naismith Trophy, the Wooden Award and the Robertson Trophy. Wiltjer was active in community service initiatives including outreach to Sacred Heart Children's Hospital, the Union Gospel Mission and contributed to a Habitat for Humanity Build. A member of Gonzaga's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Wiltjer was involved with Nike's N7 Foundation, an initiative to involve and engage the local Native American community.

Wiltjer is the ninth Zag to receive the prestigious award, and the first since Haiden Palmer was named the female recipient in 2014. The last GU male that received the honor was Blake Stepp in 2004.
