CHENEY, Wash.--The Gonzaga University men's tennis team began the 2016 fall tournament season Friday, seeing plenty of success during day one of the EWU Fall Classic at the Eastern Washington Tennis Courts in Cheney.
Six of seven Zags advanced in singles play, including two of the three playing in the top singles flight. In the Red singles flight, sophomore Ruadhan O'Sullivan began his sophomore year with a win, posting a two-set victory over Montana State's Kellen Bates. Making his collegiate debut in the top bracket, Vincent Rettke downed Idaho's Filipe Fonseca in three at 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.
Meanwhile, in the Black Singles bracket, all four Bulldogs advanced to take up half of the flight's quarterfinal slots. Two Zags entered as seeded players, and they played true to their seed as Emilio Moreno downed Seattle U's Alex Chan 6-2, 6-1, and Kyle Everly did the same to Rendell Burghart of Eastern Washington by a 6-4, 7-6 (3) scoreline. Also in the flight, Ronzai Saurombe opened his senior year with two wins, a two-setter against Eastern Washington's Garner Sears and a three-setter over the Redhawks' Miko Pasimio, while Simon Homedes Dualde won his first match as a Zag 6-1, 6-4 against Keremiah Kalmus, also of Seattle U.
Also making his collegiate debut, freshman Sam Feit played in the Red Singles flight, losing his second-round match to Arshak Ghazaryan. He also saw a consolation match Friday, falling to Montana State's Rok Sitar.
In doubles play, two of the three GU doubles pairs won and advanced to the quarterfinals. Both advancing pairs - O'Sullivan/Homedes and Moreno/Everly - won with 8-3 matches, with O'Sullivan and Homedes beating Montana State's Bates and Grant Wood. The other sophomore/freshman duo took down the Eagles' Wacil Bendjelti and Flavien Reveau.
The last GU doubles pair, Saurombe and Rettke, squared off against EWU's Vuk Vuckovic and Luke Ness, playing an extra game before falling 9-7.
