SPOKANE, Wash. -- Karley Baggerly recorded her second career brace in Gonzaga women's soccer's 5-2 victory over Portland State at Luger Field Sunday.
The Zags (3-1-1) are off to their best start since 2012 after winning their second straight match. GU is unbeaten in its last three outings.
Baggerly scored her 20th and 21st career goals and moved closer to second to most goals in program history, which is held by Annie Hawkins with 26. Baggerly climbed to third all-time with 51 career points.
Baggerly opened the scoring eight minutes into the match. She brought a pass in just over midfield, dribbled through the PSU defense and struck a ball to the far post for her second goal of the season. Maddie Kincaid scored her first collegiate goal in the 25th minute. Madeline Gotta played in a cross near the net and Kincaid drove into the goal. It was Gotta's second assist of the season.
Lauren Luke put the Zags up 3-0 with a goal in the 38th minute. Sophia Viviano found Sydney Anderson on the wing, who then played the ball into the box, and Luke slid and kicked it into the net.
Portland State's two goals came off of penalty kicks in the 40th and 54th minutes. Aurora Bodenhamer and Katie Forsee both scored their first goals of the season off of those attempts.
Baggerly and Anderson connected in the 76th minute. Anderson passed a ball to Baggerly at the top of the box, and Baggerly lofted it over the outstretched Vikings' keeper. Taylor Kernion found the net for the first time in her young collegiate career in the 87th minute. The freshman kicked in a loose ball on a rebound from a deflection off of the Portland State goalkeeper. Ashton Blanksma finished with four saves in the PSU (0-4-0) net.
It was the first time the Bulldogs scored five goals in a match since a 5-0 shutout over Idaho on Aug. 31, 2014.
Gonzaga outshot the Vikings, 16-3, and placed 10 shots on goal. The Zags also had an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
"It was an exceptional team effort today," GU Head Coach Amy Edwards said. "Again, so impressed with the energy of this team."
The Bulldogs travel to Utah State (2-3-0) Friday, before heading to Montana (3-1-1) Sunday. Start time at Utah State is scheduled for 3 p.m. Pacific Time. Live video and stats will be available on GoZags.com.
