SEATTLE--The Gonzaga men's tennis team pressured the Washington Huskies Sunday afternoon, but in the end, the Zags fell 7-0 to their hosts at Seattle's Nordstrom Tennis Center.
"The guys were competitive from start to finish today," said Gonzaga head coach Peter MacDonald. "We had some opportunities in the doubles and played well in singles."
Gonzaga challenged the Huskies throughout the lineup, forcing two matches to a third set super tiebreak and another contest to a set tiebreaker. At No. 2 singles, Vincent Rettke won his first set against Jake Douglas by a break at 4-6. He went to an extra game in the second before falling 5-7 and elongated the third set super tiebreak. He lost that by an 11-9 scoreline.
Facing the nationally-ranked Mitch Stewart atop the singles bracket, Ruadhan O'Sullivan took their second set 4-6 after losing the first by a similar tally. Stewart, ranked No. 60 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, won the super tiebreak, however, and took the point.
The Zags saw another tiebreak in the No. 4 singles contest. After getting doubled up by Joao Barra in the first, Ronzai Saurombe won six games in the second set, forcing a tiebreak for the frame. Barra won that race to seven and claimed the match.
Washington clinched the team dual victory in the first three singles contests to finish. At No. 5 singles, Simon Homedes Dualde won five games before losing, Kyle Everly took four, and Sam Feit claimed six, suffering a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Gal Hakak at No. 3 singles.
In the beginning of the dual, the Zags also hung tough during doubles play but fell in all three contests. Feit and O'Sullivan won four games at No. 1 doubles, as did Homedes Dualde and Saurombe at No. 3. Both lost 6-4. In the second doubles position, Everly and Rettke took their Washington opponents to an extra game before falling 7-5.
The Bulldogs (0-2) will now begin their home schedule with a Saturday, Jan. 28 match against local foe Eastern Washington. That contest will begin at 12:00 p.m. at The Stevens Center in Spokane. Live stats and video for that and every home match may be found on www.GoZags.com.
