Another Day, Another Sweep for WTEN

SPOKANE, Wash.-It was a bit of déjà vu for Gonzaga's women's tennis team Saturday afternoon as the Bulldogs picked up their second consecutive sweep, downing Seattle U 7-0 at The Stevens Center in Spokane.
Things started rolling for Gonzaga in doubles play, which Nevada Apollo and Domonique Garley led off with a 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles. Sophie Whittle and Kate Ketels clinched the pairs point with a 6-3 win atop the ladder, and Alex Bourguignon and Graciela Rosas completed the sweep with a 7-5 victory on court three.
In singles play, the Zags again were paced by Garley and Apollo. At No. 6 singles, Garley worked efficiently, winning 12 of 13 games played en route to her second victory of the weekend. Apollo, meanwhile, won 12 of 15 for the second night in a row, downing SU's Madison Maloney 6-2, 6-1 on court two. A sophomore from Las Vegas, Apollo now is tied for the team lead with 12 singles wins during the school year. She is also undefeated at home with a 9-0 record.
Bourguignon clinched the match at No. 4 singles. The Bulldogs' lone upperclassman, Bourguignon took down Barbara Carey 6-2, 6-4 for the clincher. It's her ninth win of the school year and first clinching point of the dual season.
On court one, Whittle downed Michelle Lui 6-4, 6-1, making up for Lui's victory between the two during the 2016 dual season. Whittle is currently ranked No. 102 in the nation and is the first Bulldog ever to earn a national ranking from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. At No. 5 singles, Ketels came back to defeat Caroline Maltby in three sets, clinching the sweep.
"It was a good way to end the weekend," said Gonzaga head coach D.J. Gurule. "Our fitness is definitely paying off. This was a good win against a good Seattle U team, and we're looking forward to another tough regional battle against Idaho on Friday."
After two consecutive opponents from the state of Washington, Gonzaga (3-0) will next move to an interstate foe: Idaho. The Zags and Vandals will square off on Friday, Feb. 17, at 5:00 p.m., once again at The Stevens Center.
