Feb. 7, 2017 SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga Bulldogs men's rowing program and head coach Dan Gehn announced their 2017 spring schedule Tuesday.
The Zags will kick it off by staying indoors, and row inside the Harry A. Green Rowing Facility in the McCarthey Athletic Center, using the erg machines, and compete in a dual against Washington State on February 25.
The season begins outdoors with a regatta against San Diego and UC San Diego on March 17 and 18 in San Diego. The Zags will compete against the two on the 17th and then row a scrimmage against them on the 18th. The Zags last competed in San Diego two years ago, when they finished in second place overall, with second-place finishes for the varsity eight, second varsity eight, and novice eight boats.
On March 26, the Zags will host a dual with Oregon State at Silver Lake. OSU was able to beat GU in all four races in the event last season.
On April 1 and 2, it is back down to San Diego for the San Diego Crew Classic. The regatta welcomes the top boats from all over the United States. Last season Yale, Cal, and Drexel were the top three finishers in the varsity eight final, and Cal finished first in the IRA National Championships varsity eight race last year as well with Yale coming in second. GU last entered the San Diego Crew Classic in 2014, where the Zags finished second in the varsity eight petite final, seventh in the second varsity eight final, and sixth in the open eight grand final. The Zags will take just their varsity eight boat to the event.
The rest of the Zags' crew team will head over to Seattle on April 1 compete in the Husky Invite. The Huskies, who finished fourth in the IRA Championships Grand Final last year, defeated Puget Sound, Western Washington, and Lewis & Clark in the event last year. The Zags last entered the event in 2002, when the varsity eight boat took second and the novice eight boat finished first.
The Bulldogs follow that up two weeks later and head cross country to Philadelphia for the Kerr Cup. Last season, the varsity eight and second varsity eight boats finished sixth in the grand finals, and the third varsity eight boat took fifth.
On April 22, Gonzaga and Washington State will contest the annual Fawley Cup at Silver Lake. The Zags swept the four-race event last season, and won in the varsity eight and second varsity eight races at the Head of the Spokane against the Cougars this past fall.
On a date to be determined, Gonzaga will battle Puget Sound in a dual at Silver Lake. Last year the event only had a varsity eight race, and Gonzaga took it by 28 seconds.
On May 13, it is the Western Sprints at Lake Natoma, Calif. Last season the GU second varsity eight and third varsity eight boats finished second, and the varsity eight boat finished fourth against the likes of UC San Diego, Oklahoma City, San Diego, and Santa Clara. Santa Clara took home the title last season.
The Bulldogs will be looking to qualify for the IRA National Championships back in Lake Natoma on June 2-4. Gonzaga last qualified for the event in 2014, where they placed 18th overall in the second varsity eight race and 24th in the varsity eight event.
