Bats Erupt for Trip's Finale in Riverside

March 14, 2017

Box Score

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Gonzaga University baseball team celebrated the end of its season-opening road trip in style Tuesday night, breaking out the bats for a 10-3 win at UC Riverside.

The Bulldogs scored a season-high 10 runs at the Riverside Sports Complex, doing all their damage in the first six innings. They wasted no time in taking a lead, scoring twice in the first inning. With two on and one out, Justin Jacobs bounced a single up the middle to bring in Jeff Bohling, and Jake Vieth plated Tyler Frost with a two-out single to center.

Gonzaga added another score in the second when Bohling doubled home Jake Roberts, but the Highlanders cut the lead to one with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame. UC Riverside then loaded the bases in the bottom of the third, but Gonzaga starter Daniel Bies escaped the jam with a flyout to Frost in center.

The Highlanders couldn't take advantage of the opportunity in the third, and the Zags made them pay in the fourth. Gonzaga scored four runs in the frame for a 7-2 lead, three of them coming on a three-run home run from Frost. Bohling also hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Gunnar Schubert.

Gonzaga tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the fifth inning, one on a throwing error from UCR's Cody Sporrer and one on a sacrifice fly from Roberts. Jacobs closed out the Zags' scoring account in the sixth with a solo home run to right field.

UC Riverside scored its last run in the fifth with an RBI single from Yeager Taylor. Starting in the sixth inning, the Zags' bullpen - Calvin LeBrun, Wyatt Mills, and Sam Hellinger - closed out the game without allowing another run. Bies picked up the win, his first of the year and his first as a starter, while UCR starter Angel Landazuri was saddled with the loss, his second of the season.

Bulldog Bites

  • Gonzaga's 10 runs scored are the most of the season and most since also reaching that mark April 16, 2016, at San Francisco. The Zags' previous season high was eight when they beat California 8-3 during game two of a doubleheader March 4.
  • Their 13 hits equaled a season high they first set during March 4's first game against the Golden Bears. Bohling and Roberts led the team with three hits apiece Tuesday night; Roberts' trio of hits equaled his career high and represented a season best for the senior from Plainfield, Ill. Seven of the Zags' starters tallied at least one hit on the night and nine different batters reached base.
  • Frost and Jacobs combined for the Bulldogs' second multi-home run game of the year. They both homered March 5 at California as well. Frost hit his fourth of the year against the Highlanders, moving into a tie for fourth-most in the West Coast Conference. Jacobs' blast in the sixth inning was his second of the season.
  • Bies equaled a pair of season and career highs in his start, pitching five innings and striking out five batters. He also hit those marks in the only other start of his career: against Indiana on Feb. 19 of this season. The redshirt sophomore retired the side in order in both the first and fourth innings, and he tallied two timely strikeouts apiece in the second and the fifth.

Mac Talk: Thoughts from Gonzaga head coach Mark Machtolf

  • "The hitters were finally able to loosen up at the plate tonight and get it rolling. We had a lot of quality at-bats."
  • "This gives us great momentum leading into our home opener. After a long road stretch, we couldn't be more excited to get back to Spokane."

Next Up:

After a 16-game road swing to begin the 2017 season, the Bulldogs (7-9) return to Spokane for their home debut on Friday, March 17. They'll face Pacific in a 6:00 p.m. contest at Patterson Baseball Complex & Washington Trust Field. That game will also be both team's first WCC matchup of the season.
