SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.-The Gonzaga University men's tennis team began West Coast Conference play Saturday, falling 4-3 to host San Francisco at the Cal Club.
San Francisco clinched the match by winning the final singles match to finish, the No. 2 singles contest. Johan Joenhagen took on Vincent Rettke in that match, winning in two sets. The Don took the first 6-3, but the freshman Zag battled back in the second, winning six games and forcing a tiebreak. Joenhagen won that tiebreak 8-6, however, to clinch the dual.
The Zags started the day by winning the doubles point, their eighth of the season. San Francisco's No. 2 doubles team won the first doubles match that finished, but Ruadhan O'Sullivan and Sam Feit evened the pairs contest with a 6-4 win atop the lineup.
On court three, Ronzai Saurombe and Simon Homedes Dualde clinched the point with a tiebreak victory over Oliver Poysti and Paul Giraud. The Zag duo won the race to seven by three at 7-4.
Once singles play started, Feit put the Bulldogs up 2-0 in the dual with a 6-2, 6-1 win on court three, but the Dons countered with wins on courts four and six. Freshman Kyle Everly re-took the lead for Gonzaga with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 6 singles, but USF tied the dual on court five. In that match, Emilio Moreno took Giraud to a tiebreak in the first set before falling in two frames.
Gonzaga (6-5, 0-1 WCC) will wrap up their weekend in the Bay Area with a 9:00 a.m. match at Santa Clara. That contest was moved up from 11:00 a.m. due to the chance of rain during the middle of the day.
